About the Event

DMV native Alex Hamburger is a flute player, singer, composer and educator who has lived and played around the world with many world class musicians. After attending SUNY Purchase and living in New York where she played many classic venues such as Smalls, The Zinc Bar, The Blue Note, Rockwood and The Stone, she was chosen as a member of the 2018 Focusyear band and moved to Basel Switzerland where the band worked with greats such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Seamus Blake, Billy Childs, Guillermo Kien, Dave Liebmann, Jorge Rossy, Norma Winston as well as released an album of original music and toured in Europe and Brazil. Alex has now returned to the DMV and is releasing her debut album “And She Spoke” in November 2021 and is a member of the 2022 Strathmore Artist in Residence class.

José Luiz Martins is a Brazilian pianist and composer from São Paulo, Brazil who has recorded and performed both as a sideman and a leader all over the world with world renowned musicians. After studying classical piano at the prestigious Escola Municipal de Música de São Paulo while being a mainstay of the São Paulo jazz scene, he moved to Basel Switzerland on a full scholarship to do his performance masters and later to New York on scholarship again for a second masters at Queens College and is now living and playing all over the east coast. His two albums as a leader brought him important prizes and received amazing reviews of specialized criticism and he is now getting ready to release his third which includes the great Jorge Rossy.

Stephen Arnold is one of the most in-demand and versatile upright and electric bassists in the Washington DC area. Originally from Greenfield, MA he studied with Herman Burney at the George Washington University and was a member of the 2018 class of the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program. He has performed at the city’s top venues, including Blues Alley, The Kennedy Center, the Howard Theater, Jojo’s, and Twins Jazz, and his debut album as a leader Sea Change was a finalist for Jazz Album of the Year at the 2020 Wammie Awards and voted the #4 DC Jazz Album of 2020 by CapitalBop.

Julian Berkowitz is a drummer and educator residing in Washington, DC. Rooted in the deep tradition of American jazz, fusion, funk, and the rhythms of Brazil, Julian has quickly become one of the DC area’s most in-demand drummers. Julian has performed with musicians such as Chuck Redd, Mike Pope, Herman Burney, J.S. Williams, Tedd Baker, Tim Murphy, Thad Wilson, Herb Scott, and Todd Simon. Julian has played at many of the top jazz venues venues as in the DC metro area, including Blues Alley, Rams Head on Stage, Alice’s Jazz and Cultural Society, Twins Jazz, An Die Musik Live, The Avalon Theatre, Jojo, 49 West, Mr. Henry’s, and Takoma Station Tavern.
