Leo Maxey is an accomplished Baltimore trumpeter. Reared in Augusta, GA, he began playing trumpet at an early age under the tutelage of his father and went on to Brevard College, Jackson State University and Johns Hopkins’ Peabody Institute. He has four albums out and leads several small ensembles, including co-leading an experimental nonet "MW9" (with co-director Billy Wolfe). He has also worked with Tito Puente, Jr., Tito Rojas, Gary Grainger, Mark Gross, The Four Tops, The Impressions, and Los Angeles-based composers and producers Jacob Yoffee and Roahn Hylton, among others.
In addition to his small ensemble work, Leo has been attracted to large ensembles and has been a member of the David Murray Baltimore Big Band, Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra, Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra and the Whitt Williams Big Band.
In forming his own sound, Leo studied with Alex Norris, Gary Thomas, Michael Formanek, Tim Murphy, Paul Bollenback, Blake Meister, Russell Thomas, Robert Blaine, and Darcie Bishop.
