Peña, Prince and Keys

Join us for this trio of virtuosos - Federico Gonzalez Peña on the keyboard, Mark Prince on drums and Marshall Keys on saxophone.

Federico was born in Montevideo Uruguay and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1984, at the age of 18, Peña made the move to the States, attending the Berklee College of Music before settling in Washington, D.C. He has performed or recorded with with an extensive list of well-known artists such as Me'shell N'DegeOcello, Maxwell, Angela Boffill, Rare Essence, Pieces of a Dream, Digable Planets, Alana Davis, George Howard, Roy Hargrove, Chaka Khan, Cassandra Wilson, Marcus Miller, SMV (Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller & Victor Wooten) and many others.

Born in Washington, DC, Mark has developed into one of the premier drummers in today’s music scene. Honing his skills at Howard University under the expert tutelage of the legendary Grady Tate, as well as maintaining a strong classical background as a National Symphony Fellowship recipient, his versatility is a sought after attribute amongst the musical community both nationally and internationally. He currently works with the seminal World-Beat/R&B sensation Fertile Ground in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Three albums with Philadelphia-based Jazz phenom Ruth Naomi Floyd have garnered critical acclaim. And his tours with jazz piano virtuoso, Bobby Lyle, along with his most recent collaboration with the Bobby Lyle/Paul Jackson, jr. Organ Trio have served to solidify Mark’s potent presence amongst the international drumming community.

Marshall Keys is one of the most versatile saxophonists to ever come out of Washington, DC. He began his training in the DC Youth Orchestra Program and continued it in the Jazz Studies Program at Howard University. He cut his teeth playing in local bands before gaining his first professional experience with The Blackbyrds and a long association with the great blues organist Jimmy McGriff. Marshall has worked with many of the world’s greatest jazz and blues musicians including Lionel Hampton, Jimmy Heath, Clark Terry, Jimmy Witherspoon, Groove Holmes, Big Joe Turner and Hank Jones. He has worked with Branford Marsalis and Steve Allen, swung with Keter Betts and Al Grey, recorded with Cyrus Chestnut and Vinny Valentino, and jammed with Sonny Stitt and Stevie Wonder. The Stevie Wonder jam took place right here at Takoma Station!
