Sarah Hughes has nearly 30 years of experience performing on alto sax, soprano sax, flute and clarinet. Her forte is avant-garde jazz, but she is a versatile player and spent many years on the straight ahead jazz scene. Saturday’s performance will draw from her roots in straight ahead jazz but will include a dollop of modern, improvisational music.

Sarah earned her Bachelor’s degree in music education at the University of Maryland and has a master’s degree in jazz saxophone performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. She regularly plays with the top players in the DC area and has played with many brilliant jazz artists, including Lee Konitz, Dan Tepfer, Matt Wilson, Michael Formanek, Teddy Charles, Freddie Redd, Grachan Monchur III, and Andrew Cyrille, among others. She has three albums out as leader, the most recent being “Forever Cocoon,” released in 2021.

Saturday’s performance will feature Chris Barrick on vibraphone, Steve Arnold on bass and Mike Kuhl on drums. You’ll also be able to catch Sarah as one of the three headliners at the Washington Women in Jazz Festival next month.
